stumbled upon emporium

Today I went shopping with my mother, In the reasonably sleepy South Molton. We went mainly because there are some really good charity shops their, but unfortunately most of the charity shops where closed (because apparently people don't like to work around easter!) 

Luckily Nightingale Lane Vintage  was open; I have to say a few words about this shop, because it has to be one of the most perfect vintage shops I have ever been to. The shop itself is beautifully arranged.  (and doesn't have that weird smell that some vintage shops have) The clothes are all immaculate and have obviously been carefully picked out.The clothes are also relatively cheap for vintage, so if you are in the South Molton area Nightingale Lane Vintage is defiantly a must. 

here is a beautiful example of the kind of thing you can purchase there. 

At the vintage shop in question I purchased a very snazzy 60's shirt, with a very pretty print and a very large collar.....

I also purchased some pretty hair slides.

If I could assemble a film about curtains,  I would, it would include people standing in front of curtains and the light shining on their faces and curtains blowing in the wind.  because hell, curtains are damn pretty(and often ignored) . I know that it would not be a particularly interesting production but well..at least it would be aesthetically pleasing. Anyway I know this is a slightly awkward blog post but anyway....curtains.

prom queen dream

I am literally peeing myself with excitement as prom in on in under 4 months. My main cause for excitement is that I get to choose a dress and shoes and possibly a bag. I'm planning on going for a pastel coloured 50's style prom dress with clunky platforms and a sparkly cardigan. Etsy is an absolute shrine of gorgeous 50's prom dresses and I have been torturing myself  looking at all of them for a few weeks. Anyway prom viiibbbess........

A dragon would be a great accessory at halloween.

Even though i'm in Uganda for Halloween ( not that I mind that much ) I have had a hankering for super witchy, black and lacey outfits and pointy victorian boots. Also while watching Merlin I have been loving Morgana's black lace dress, scary dark makeup and her Dragon (I may only be able to acquire the makeup and the Dress though.)

Made some stuff

This is the dress I made yesterday out of the material in my (Sinead's) last post. I also bought some lace and a zip for it with Sophie (also mentioned in a previous post, I think).

I'm quite proud of it. Above is the lace detailing on the collar thing, and a bow in the centre. I had a bit of trouble getting the waist the right size, but I think it's fine now.

Here's a skirt I made today, and a better look at the whole dress behind it. I like the little skirt, it's made of the same fabric as the collar I made ages ago. I think I might make a habit of making my own clothes, and making them as presents for other people too.

For my next project I plan to make a skirt, either made of kitten-patterned fabric or with some form of kitten embellished on it, and with lilac ribbon and buttons. WATCH THIS KITTEN-OBSESSED SPACE.

A day full of make-do-and-mend spirit

Unfinished collar...

So yes, I've been known to have previously been sceptical of  detatchable collars. I mean, what's the point when you can buy a shirt with a collar? But after some style research, I saw the practicality of them. If you have a top that is plain and you don't know how to snazz it up, they're perfect! 

Therefore I decided to take things into my own hands and break out the sewing kit.

I got this gorgeous cordeuroy fabric from my Grandmother, I think it's from the 70's. It's beauuutiful, I might make a little skirt with the rest of it.

Ta-daa!

Anyway, I also found some lace on a pin cushion type thing, and I figured I needed it more than the pin cushion, so I unstitched it and used it on my collar.

Then I found a stray button and covered it with the fabric, and attatched it (giving the 'detatchable' aspect to the accessory).

The collar goes perfectly with my simple black sleeveless top.

I must say, I got a bit of an adrenaline rush after successfully making the collar. Especially as the whole thing was mainly improvising, I haven't previously made something like that. 





So this led to my making another (not as good) one, using some adorable yellow gingham check fabric I salvaged from one of my sewing bags.
I also found an old doll and unceremoniously ripped the arms off to make the thing in the centre. 
Then I stuck one of these fabulous shiny red hearts onto a button, and stitched it on.
I think this would have turned out better if the needle on my sewing machine hadn't broken, boo hoo :c 

Sunglasses (minus lenses)

Shortly after these two creations, I still had a touch of the old DIY fever, so I dug out some cheap sunglasses and popped the lenses out (loosening them by heating them with a hairdryer), a quick way to create a jazzy new accessory.
